Capturing Precious Baby Memories | Tips for New Parents

The baby years are so fleeting. How can we hold on to those precious first moments and years?

Reflecting on Baby Memories

My baby turned 1 this week—perhaps my last baby (do I need to decide just yet?). I feel a desperate need to memorise her just as she is right now: still a baby, not quite walking, babbling sweetly, and wanting me, her mum, more than anyone else in the world.

Perhaps it’s because my 5-year-old started school this week and barely tells me anything about it. Or maybe it’s the three sleepless nights with a coughing baby. Whatever the reason, I’m feeling particularly sentimental.

Packing away her size 0 clothes, the last of the baby sizes, felt monumental. Normally, I’d give them away without a second thought. This time, they’re hidden under the bed.

Memories Fade

I can barely remember what my 5-year-old was like as a baby. I recall the exhaustion and the tears—hers and mine. How do moments that feel so precious at the time slip away so easily?

I once asked my mum what I was like as a baby. Her response—“Um, just a typical baby I guess”—didn’t quite capture the depth of what I was looking for.

Modern Parents and Memory Keeping

Us modern parents seem to be better memory keepers than our own were. We scrapbook, journal, and photograph every moment. My favourite way to sort my photos and memories these days is through apps like Google Photos or Apple Photos, which allow me to organise and create albums effortlessly.

But even with photos, memories don’t always stick. Looking at pictures of my eldest as a baby, I sometimes struggle to recognise her.

For some, baby clothes hold the key to memories. One mum said holding her baby’s old outfits brought back vivid moments. For another, the smell of baby wipes unlocked a flood of nostalgia. For me, it’s novels. My memories of my first baby are tied to the book I was reading in the neonatal ward, sitting by her side in a leather recliner as she lay swaddled in blankets.

Creating Context for Memories

Memory often needs context. Thinking about the preschool years feels like a blur of exhaustion, but specific moments stand out: dancing in the lounge with a laughing toddler or watching my mum cry as she held her first grandchild.

Practical Tips for Capturing and Preserving Baby Memories

Photography: Capturing the Magic

  • Lighting is Key: Use natural light when possible. Position your baby near a window or head outside for soft, flattering light.
  • Get Candid: Forget staged shots—capture those giggles, yawns, and messy moments.
  • Details Matter: Take close-ups of their tiny toes, chubby hands, or even their favourite toy.
  • Include Yourself: Hand the camera over to your partner or use a tripod and timer to snap photos with you in them. You’ll treasure these later.

Storing and Organising Photos

  • Cloud Storage: Services like Google Photos, iCloud, or Amazon Photos offer easy backups with organised folders.
  • External Hard Drive: For added security, store your photo collection on an external hard drive. Choose one with at least 1TB of storage and update it regularly.
  • Print or Digital?:
    • Print: Create photobooks through platforms like Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Canva. These tangible keepsakes make wonderful gifts.
    • Digital: Invest in a digital photo frame to display a rotating collection of your favourite memories in your home.
  • Organise Regularly: Set aside time monthly to sort and back up new photos. Delete duplicates and blurry shots to avoid overwhelm.

Videos or Photos? Why Not Both?

  • Videos: Capture their first laugh, first steps, or everyday babbles. Short clips of 10–30 seconds are easy to store and quick to watch later.
  • Photos: Use photos for timeless moments—family cuddles, milestones, or quiet moments.

Pro tip: Combine photos and videos into highlight reels with apps like iMovie or Adobe Express.

Journaling Baby Memories

  • Keep it Simple: Use a notebook or a dedicated baby journal. Jot down milestones, funny moments, or your feelings about parenting.
  • Digital Journals: Apps like Day One let you pair journal entries with photos.
  • Prompts for Journaling:
    • What made you laugh today?
    • What’s your baby’s current favourite toy or habit?
    • Describe a special moment you shared this week.

Sentimental Keepsakes

  • Memory Boxes: Store items like your baby’s first outfit, hospital wristband, or special cards. Use airtight containers to protect against mould and dust.
  • Artwork Storage: Scan or photograph your child’s artwork to keep a digital record without clutter.

Involving Loved Ones

  • Ask grandparents or aunts to contribute photos or notes about special moments. These different perspectives add richness to your baby’s story.
  • Create a shared family album through cloud services where everyone can upload their memories.

The baby years may pass quickly, but by intentionally capturing and preserving memories, we can hold onto the magic of those fleeting moments. Whether it’s through journaling, photos, or keepsakes, every effort to remember is a gift to our future selves.
